What to do when you don’t know what to do…

Pray continually — when you rise in the morning, in the middle of the day and before you lie down at night — all the time, anytime.

01 bible psalm

Talk with God out loud, silently, through song — always and any way.

Silence your mind, still yourself and let go of unnecessary worry.

Listen for His voice throughout your day — open your heart to hear Him and He will communicate with you.

Take a walk, enjoy nature and the beauty around you — breathe deeply, listen intently and focus on God’s creation.

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.” ~Psalm 119:105

Write down your thoughts in a journal — jot down scripture, quotes and anything which speaks to you.

Read through and pray the Psalms — you will find your worth, your beauty and God’s faithfulness and strength.

Often times, the best thing we can do when we don’t know what to do — is to keep putting one foot in front of the other. I once read how God cannot lead us if we are just standing still. Once we choose to start moving in some direction — any direction — the Lord will be able to direct our steps.

“Life is a walk. Each day we take steps. Our tomorrow is determined by the steps we take today.” ~Stormie Omartian

And while our focus should be on what lies ahead, every once in a while we need to look back and reassure ourselves by recalling what God has already done on our behalf. Sometimes a backward glance can give us the confidence to keep moving forward.

May you, dear reader, find the courage and strength to take a step out in faith today even if you don’t know what to do or don’t know where you are going. One step is all it takes to get you moving. That first step is often the hardest one to take, but once you’re moving it often becomes easier to keep stepping out in faith. And remember — when you don’t know what to do — fall to your knees.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him and he will make your paths straight.” ~Proverbs 3:5-6

  1. Hi Amy, this post really spoke to me. I’m in a season of pulling back, rest and surrender, and sometimes it can feel like there’s no forward momentum at all. Times of waiting on God for wisdom to proceed can cause us to feel halted and stalled. I love what you (and Stormie O’Martian’s great quote) have to say about keeping going even in these slowing down seasons. By constant prayer and listening intently for His voice we are well placed to hear the words we need to steer us in the right direction. Thank you for this timely reminder! Blessings from your neighbour at coffee-for-your-heart. 🙂

    1. Thank you, Joy, for stopping by! I’m so glad my word spoke to you in this season of your life. If I’ve learned anything in my life…and I like to think I have ;)…it is to keeping putting one foot in front of the other even in seasons where I’m not sure where I’m heading. Placing my trust in the Lord that He will lead me the right way…

I hope you are finding rest at this time and will very clearly hear the Lord’s voice.
