“Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make your paths straight.”
Even when you may not understand why something is happening or you’re feeling unsure about what to do and what direction to take, the Lord will guide you when you simply trust in Him and acknowledge Him in everything you do.
Wait a minute you may say, “I do that but all I get is silence!” Yeah, sometimes it can feel like He has stepped aside and left us to find our own way, but what I have found over the years is through the silence the Lord can actually speak to us loud and clear. When God seems silent we can either throw up our hands and feel abandoned — or we can choose to dig deeper into His Word and cling to Him like never before.
“The deeper we press into the Lord, the more of his perfect love we experience, and the less fear we will have.” ~Stormie Omartian
Many times when we think the Lord is silent and not leading us it’s because we have missed the road signs placed directly in front of us. How often over the years while I held out for a burning bush sign to light my path that I missed the obvious — I missed God giving me clear direction because I believed somehow that when He spoke it would be in some booming voice when more often He uses the ordinary to help guide us. The road signs we are straining to see may simply be in the form of someone speaking the truth to us about a situation we are in or a resource given to us which helps to validate a decision we are contemplating. Nothing fancy, nothing grand and spectacular — just the ordinary of this life which points the way.
When we stop looking for answers in the obvious, we will often find them right in front of us in the ordinary.
I believe many times we just have to step out in a direction, make the best decision we can based around God’s Word and what we know to be right, and then trust the Lord to come along side of us. I once read how God cannot lead us until we first step out in some direction — and I know this to be true from my own experiences over the past few years.
“When you begin moving forward, the next big step you need to take often comes into focus.” ~from my journal 2009
May we all have the trust to take that first step today — right now — no matter what the circumstances, no matter what decision you are perhaps wrestling with, no matter how fearful you may be. Step out and trust the Lord to come along side of you making your paths straight.
